Founder of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College's Culinary Program, Chef Robert G. Werth, C.E.C., C.C.F., A.C.C., H.D.G.T, died on Monday, February 22, 2010, at Grace Health Care in Asheville. He was 80 years old.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Jeanne; two sons, Christopher and Steven and his wife, Jackie; brother, John; and sister, Marlise.
Chef Werth was hired by Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A.B. Tech) in 1968 to design and teach the Culinary Curriculum, the first such program in North Carolina. During his tenure of 28 years, he obtained numerous professional honors including being named as a Fellow to the American Academy of Chefs. Chef Werth's extraordinary efforts helped bring National attention to the Culinary Program which at one time, was one of the best such programs, for a two year college, in the nation.
Prior to moving to Asheville, Chef Werth had an extensive career working as a chef in such fine hotels as the Plaza, the Waldorf Astoria and the Greenbrier of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to The St. Vincent dePaul Society of St. Eugene's Catholic Church, Asheville, or the Salvation Army.
