Funeral service for Viola H. Scarborough will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Ashelawn Garden of Memories, Asheville. Morris Funeral Home in Asheville is assisting the family.
Mrs. Cashwell, wife of the late Austin Cashwell, died February 17, 2010. Born April 22, 1913, in Little Switzerland, she was a daughter of the late Elliott and Maude Buchanan Hollifield. An accomplished artist in the mediums of pastels, acrylic and oil, she taught art and was known for her seascapes and lighthouse portraits. She presented one of her paintings to be hung over the mantle of the governor's summer mansion in Asheville. A writer of poetry, her works were read on national T.V. by Arthur Smith and recognized by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. She attended Asbury Memorial U.M.C. in Asheville and was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington,
where she was a volunteer for 20 years with Cape Fear Hospital and a member of Cape Fear Eastern Star Chapter 364. She served in all offices and was made a life member. She also enjoyed square dancing.
Surviving are her son, William Grayson Scarborough (Irene), Columbia; daughter, Virginia Ann Scarborough Yates, Raleigh; brother, Bill Hollifield, Winston Salem; sisters, Okalee Stephens, Lake Wales, Fla., Velda Sanders, Huntsville, Ala., Betty Naylor, Orlando, Fla., Mary Sue Russell, Charlotte; two granddaughters, Anne W. Yates and Deborah Lynn Owens; three great-grandchildren.
